Use system/environment variables in dashboards

Hi all
I would like to use system/environment variables in dashboards to have dashboards dependent of the host, where grafana runs. Is there a possibility to do this?
In the dashboard editor in the dropdown for the variable type, there is a type ‘system’, but this doesn’t work. When I click on this dropdwon element, I get back to the previous screen. There seems to be no documentation about this dropdown element too.
I use grafana 7.3.1 on linux.

The problem/bug with the dropdown is still there in version 7.3.5.

No. The problem with type ‘system’ in the dropdown is still there and I don’t know a way to use environment variables in grafana dashboards.

I am using grafana 9.x. Is there anyway we can access host environment variables directly in queries or via grafana variables?

Another way is export the values to a text file and use a csv plugin
