Change template variable colors?

I’m using template variables to create dynamic dashboards. I’ve tried changing the color of a variable but it only saves the color change for that specific dynamic variable. IE if the template variable is named $a I want all values returned in that template to be green but it won’t let me set that specific variable to be that color. If I change the colors in the legend it only saves for the specific variable in the legend but none of the others when I select a new dynamic search variable. I hope this made sense. .
