Hi everyone,
I’ve been working with Grafana lately and started thinking about dashboard design in a more “puzzle-like” way similar to how something like NYT Letter Boxed works, where you don’t just look at individual pieces, but try to connect everything efficiently to solve a bigger picture.
In my case, I’m trying to build a monitoring dashboard where different panels (CPU, memory, alerts, logs, etc.) don’t just show isolated metrics, but actually help you quickly “connect the dots” when something goes wrong—almost like solving a small daily puzzle.
A few questions for the community:
- Has anyone designed dashboards with a similar “pattern recognition / quick problem-solving” mindset?
- How do you structure panels so that issues become obvious without jumping between multiple dashboards?
- Any best practices for reducing cognitive load while still keeping detailed observability?
I feel like most dashboards become overwhelming over time, and I’m trying to make mine feel more intuitive—almost like a well-designed game or puzzle rather than just raw metrics.
Would love to hear how others approach this.
