Alias not working for tags with dot within their names

I have a tag as abc.x.y and i specified it in the GROUP BY clause. However when i specify it in alias as $tag_abc.x.y, i do not see the value of abc.x.y as legends in graph lines .

Legend is displayed as
undefined.x.y
I am using the latest rleased Grafana version
