Using a Grafana Variable to control Y-Axis Max in the Time Series Plot (GraphNG)

  • What Grafana version and what operating system are you using?
    8.x

  • What are you trying to achieve?
In the Time-Series Plot, I am trying to use a Grafana variable as y-axis max across several panels in a dashboard. This would give the user an ability to select y-axis maximum range from a drop-down list of pre-determined values.

  • How are you trying to achieve it?
Define a variable, use it’s name in the Max Field of the Time Series graph.

  • What happened?
The maximum (or minimum) Field in the Time-Series plot does not allow '$" symbol that indicates variable. I am also suspecting that the time-series plot would support using a variable for this. The “old” graph did (somewhat) support it.

  • What did you expect to happen?
I would have expected that the time series plot would be able to obtain the value of the variable to set said value to be the maximum range of the plotted data.

  • Can you copy/paste the configuration(s) that you are having problems with?
No, this is easy to experience/see/duplicate on any time series plot.

  • Did you receive any errors in the Grafana UI or in related logs? If so, please tell us exactly what they were.
No, just unable to enter $variableName value into the max field of the time series graph.

  • Did you follow any online instructions? If so, what is the URL?
No. This is an obvious and intuitive operation.
