From my understanding only letters, numbers and underscores will be valid in metric names approx by the end of December. While renaming my metrics removing special characters now I have also discovered that I get warnings of unsupported names when the length of the name is greater than 64 characters. I have had no problem with this until later versions. Is this also a new requirement of metric names?

Yes, these restrictions came with the v0.45.0 release and are planned to become an error in the v0.48.0.
The length limitation is coming from the OpenTelementry metrics convention Metrics API | OpenTelemetry.
