Grafana Campfire 🔥 Your First OSS Contribution - (Grafana Community Call - July 2026)

Topic: Your First OSS Contribution

Date and Time: 2026-07-10T12:30:00Z

Dear Community Members :waving_hand: ,

Ever wondered how the Grafana project becomes one of the most widely adopted open source tools in the observability space? In this Campfire community call, we’re taking a deep dive into the story behind Grafana’s open source journey and then rolling up our sleeves to show you exactly how you can become part of that story.

Hosts: Syed Usman Ahmad
Experts: Myrle Krantz
Moderators: Carl Bergquist

In this session, we’ll cover:

:mantelpiece_clock: The OSS History: How Grafana evolved from its early beginnings into a thriving open source ecosystem, the key milestones along the way, and the community-driven decisions that shaped where it is today.

:seedling: Why Open Source Matters: What makes OSS such a powerful model for building software, and how community contributions (big and small) have directly shaped the tools you use every day.

:hammer_and_wrench: Your First Contribution, Live: A real, hands-on walkthrough using the Grafana project as our example. We’ll show you:

  • How to find a good first issue
  • Setting up your local dev environment
  • Making your change, writing a commit, and opening a PR
  • What happens after you submit: reviews, feedback, and getting merged

:light_bulb: Insider Tips: Common mistakes first-time contributors make, how to get unstuck, and how to build confidence contributing to any OSS project, not just Grafana.

Who this is for:
Whether you’re a developer who’s never contributed to open source before, a Grafana user curious about what goes on behind the scenes, or someone looking to build your OSS portfolio, this session is designed to make the process feel approachable, not intimidating.

By the end, you’ll understand not just how Grafana got here, but how you can help shape where it goes next.
